Unable to activate a Discover for ArcGIS standalone license error -103, 105, -106 or -136

Occurrence

You have your standalone (also known as trial or node locked) license details but are receiving network error such as -103, -105, -106 or -136 error codes trying to activate it.

Solution

The easiest workaround to this error is try a different internet connection to activate on, i.e. hotspot your smartphone's mobile data, and connect to its hotspot wifi. Or If possible take your laptop home or to a cafe public wifi connection to try and activate.

To troubleshoot the cause of this error on your internet connection check the following steps -

1. Are you on a corporate network? Do you use a Proxy server? If so you may need to set the proxy server and login details see this KB -

2. Are you working out of the office, and using your company's VPN? If so try temporarily turning this off and try activating.

3. Are you running any antivirus? If so try turning this off temporarily while activating. You can also add an exception in the antivirus software for the program -
C:\Program Files\ArcGIS\Pro\bin\ArcGISPro.exe
Add 'whitelist' the URL -
http://hostedactivation.com/

4. You can try increasing the DNS timeout, details on how to do this are here -

5. You can workaround the error by activating the license via emailing the offline request file. See this KB for detailed steps -
