The Datamine Discover 2023 Bundle (23.x) supports and installs MapInfo Pro Advanced 2021.1 and Discover3D.

Datamine Discover supports the following operating systems:

Windows® 11 (64-bit)
Windows® 10 (64-bit)

- ARM CPU Processors such as or Qualcomm Snapdragon or Apple Macbook M1/M2 chips are NOT supported.

- Apple Macintosh OSX and Linux operating systems are NOT supported.

- Virtualisation systems such as Citrix, Apple Mac Parallels or VMWare are NOT supported.

Unable to open TAB files linking Access or Excel files in MapInfo Pro 64-bit

Occurrence

In 64-bit MapInfo Pro, I receive an error or crash when trying to open TAB files that linked to an Access or Excel file. Or MapInfo is simply crashing when trying to open a workspace.

Note that if you save the XSLX file in Excel as a CSV or legacy 97-03 XLS format, these still open.

Solution

This is due to Microsoft not supporting side-by-side installation of Office 32bit and 64bit versions.

There is a workaround that has been tested with Office 2013 or Office 2016 (365) installed. If you are using Office 2010, it is recommended you upgrade to a newer supported version of Office first.

In the start menu, open the Datamine folder and find the "Access Database Fix". Run this shortcut and click OK on the prompt to apply.

Note that this fix is not permanent, and may break when Windows Update automatically updates your Office installation. If this occurs, the fix will need to be run again from time to time.

If the issues persists, please do the following -

Opening the Discover 3D window causes a crash (64-bit only)

Occurrence

When running MapInfo Discover 3D (64-bit), attempting to open the Discover 3D window crashes on opening.
Or you may be receiving an error message "Unable to open cosmetic.fdb".

Solution

This is due to Microsoft not supporting side-by-side installation of Office 32bit and 64bit versions.

How do I import an ESRI ArcGIS shape file (.shp) into MapInfo?

Discover has a powerful tool to batch input many files and will automatically set correct projections.

Discover method -

1. Select DISCOVER>Import>Vector Import.

2. Select File format to import

3. Select one or more files (note must be in the same folder for multiple files)

4. Review Output TAB filename, and other settings

5. Click Import

6. If a projection cannot be determined, you will be prompted to select a projection.

Alternatively Mapinfo has two different methods.

A: Use MapInfo's File>Open menu option, and set the Files of Type to ESRI Shapefile. This option
requires the user to specify a projection, and the file is read-only (it cannot be edited within MapInfo).

B: Use the Universal Translator. This option will pick up the projection information in the shapefile, and
creates a MapInfo table that is editable.

To use the Universal Translator:

1/. Within MapInfo navigate to Tools>Universal Translator, open up this tool by clicking on the menu
item.

2/. In the Universal Translator dialog, set the Source Format to ESRI Shape.

3/. Browse to and select the Source Files (Note that you can batch convert by selecting multiple files).

4/. Set the Destination Format as MapInfo TAB

5/. Specify the Destination Directory location by browsing.

6/. Press OK and open the generated MapInfo tab file using the MapInfo File>Open command.

This procedure requires you to have access to the destination computer. If you are unsure of this - see the related article on transferring a License to park on the Encom license server.

NOTE: This procedure does NOT require a connection to the internet and does not require contacting Datamine.

1/. On the destination computer, ensure that the same version of MapInfo Discover is installed as is present on the
old computer.

2/. On the destination computer, run MapInfo Discover, and select the Activate option when prompted. Note
the Hardware ID provided.

3/. On the old computer open the Discover license manager by either -

Some tips to making the most of the new 64-bit environment and capabilities, particularly of MapInfo Pro. This new user interface ("64bit") version was first released by Pitney Bowes in 2014, MapInfo Pro 12.5. Pitney Bowes then released a compatible Discover add in version in 2015. The Discover addin (not MapInfo Pro) was sold to Datamine in 2017.

The major change in 64bit, apart from the new user interface and raster menu, is the Layouts have changed. since 2012 in 32bit, there has been a "Layout Designer" window. This is now the "Layout" window and old layouts are not there. any workspace containing an old layout, is automatically converted to a layout designer new layout window.

Once you have installed the 64bit version, it is not recommended or supported to use or install the previous 32bit versions, as there are conflict when opening Excel or Access files, and some tables and workspaces created 64bit will not be openable in 32bit.

Occurrence

I wish to select all the points (or any other objects) in a table that lie within the polygon regions in another table, such as collars or sample points within a tenement boundary.

Solution
You can use the Boundary Select tool, found on the MapInfo Pro Drawing toolbar.
Alternatively to perform the query, navigate to Query>SQL Select and enter the syntax:

The 'where Condition' syntax is selecting any objects from the Points tables which are within the Polygons table.
Simplly supplement the points and polygon table which your table names.

To permanently save the resulting selection navigate to File>Save Copy As and save the selection as a new MapInfo Professional table.

The Contour Operation in the new MapInfo Pro Raster can automatically create polygon contours in one step, by setting the 'Contour Type' as 'Region':

One of the easiest ways to convert contours to regions in the old Surfaces module, is to generate them using different tools.

To generate regions -
1. Use Surfaces > Grid Utilities > Classify and click the Auto button. Enter the desired number of contour intervals/ranges (via the add/delete/insert rows controls) and their from/to values.

2. After the you are satisfied with the classified ranges, click Save As to create a new grid file.

What is the difference between registering a raster image via MapInfo Pro versus MapInfo Discover?

Two methods are available within the MapInfo Pro and MapInfo Discover product suite to register raster images in real-world coordinates.

The process of registering an image involves associating map coordinates, usually X and Y, with corresponding pixels on an unregistered image.

MapInfo Pro Image Registration

Table>Raster>Modify Image Registration…

The MapInfo Pro registration process will register points on an image with the assigned X and Y values, and locate as defined by the specified projection. This process is satisfactory if no distortions or rotations exist in the unregistered image file.

However, if you are using an image which is skewed, stretched or distorted e.g. from scanning, the image registration process within MapInfo Pro will not adjust the image to accommodate localised distortions.

For example, if there is significant error (pixels) in the registration points, this indicates the image does not match and requires warping to correctly match the desired map registration points.

What difference does this make and what are the consequences of a distorted image to
my map?

The difference this makes to a mapper window can be dramatic, depending on the amount of distortion or rotation, following the registration of a distorted image. You may observe considerable distortions in vector layers located in the mapper window. This is due to the mapper window manipulating the coordinate system grid around the distorted registered image. As a consequence the vector layers will be located in the correct coordinate space, but will appear either distorted or incorrectly orientated, and the raster image may also shift as you zoom/pan.
