How do I add more WMTS or XYZ Tileserver layers in MapInfo?

Occurrence

In QGIS or ArcGIS you can link XYZ Tile Server (also known as WMTS) web layer to add more Base Maps, such as OpenStreetMaps.org. It is also used by many webmap providers such as Google Maps and Mapbox.

MapInfo Pro has the same Base Maps layer such as Bing aerial and Precisely, but how can I add more?

Solution

You can create your own TAB and XML files based on the examples in C:\Program Files\MapInfo\Professional\TileServer. OSM_Roads is the OpenStreeMap XYZ Tileserver example (that is no longer published in the Mapinfo menu).

In Discover 2021 a new tool was added to help you create your own Tileserver tab files.

To do this go to Discover>Import>XYZ Base maps

The URLs can be found by searching the internet for "XYZ Tile servers" and you will find source such as this -

https://www.spatialbias.com/2018/02/qgis-3.0-xyz-tile-layers/

https://www.hatarilabs.com/ih-en/how-to-add-a-google-map-in-qgis-3-tutorial

<p style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 15px; font-family: " avenir="" next="" w01",="" "avenir="" w00",="" next",="" avenir,="" "helvetica="" neue",="" sans-serif;="" font-size:="" 16px;="" background-color:="" rgb(255,="" 255,="" 255);"="">Note While this is technically possible, you should make sure to check the terms and conditions for the website regarding using their map tiles i.e. : <a class="link-titled" href="https://developers.google.com/maps/terms-20180207#10.-license-restrictions." title="https://developers.googl ...

How do I update or link tables to my Access/Excel file?

MapInfo Pro can open Access database of Excel files directly, so that any changes to the data (i.e. new rows added or cell values changed) are automatically shown in MapInfo Pro.

There are 2 methods to do this -

1. Create a linked TAB file

Simply go to HOME>Open>Table, and change the file type to Excel or Access. Make sure to not tick the Create copy in MapInfo format option.

The downside of this method is the browser attribute data will be read only in MapInfo. You can create points from the coordinate data in the table, but when these are moved in the map, or values changed, or new rows added, you will need to use Spatial>Create>Create Point (make sure to tick Overwrite points) to sync the browser and map coordinates and points.

Also the file will be locked, so you will need to close the file in MapInfo to edit it in Excel/Access, or overwrite it with a new copy.

If you receive an update file, you can simply copy and paste over the existing Access/Excel file with the same name. Note that structural changes such as adding/removing fields or changing field names are not supported by this method and will require a new tab file to be created by repeated Home>open table.

If new rows are not appearing, open the TAB file in Notepad and mark sure no ranges is defined on the Excel file i.e. if it looks like this -

File "DH_Collars.xlsx"

  Type XLS Titles Range "DH_Collars!A2:U58"

Delete the "!A2:U58" and save the TAB file and reopen it.

2. Create a ODBC database table

MapInfo can open any database table by using Wi ...

Unable to open TAB files linking Access or Excel files in MapInfo Pro 64-bit

But in Excel they are formatted Number type.

Solution

This issue is fixed in MapInfo 2019.1 which can be downloaded with the latest Discover bundle here -

https://discoverkb.dataminesoftware.com/questions.php?questionid=818

This is a regression defect introduced in MapInfo 2019. To workaround the issue, you can save the Excel file as a CSV. A CSV file can still be eited in Excel, and it will defualt to the appropriate fields types when opened in MapInfo.

Unable to make ODBC/DBMS Table mappable

Occurrence

I have created an ODBC connection and successfully opened a DBMS Table. When I navigate to Table>Maintenance>Make DBMS Table Mappable I receive either the error:

"The table you have chosen cannot be made mappable. To be made mappable, a table must contain a spatial column or at least two numeric columns"

Along with either

"Could not find output table 'MAPINFO_MAPCATALOG"

Or

"Unable to download only the OBJECT from a DBMS table. Select an additional attribute column"

Solution

1. Ensure you have created a MAPINFO_MAPCATALOG table in the source database. To create this database table navigate to Tools>Tool Extensions>MapInfo Easyloader.

Note that you will need to be logged into the ODBC Database with a Administrator account for the database, so you can create the table.

2. Select the ODBC connection at the top of the EasyLoader dialog, and then click the Map Catalog button. Close the Easyloader tool and check In the database, it has automatically created a MAPINFO_MAPCATALOG table.

3. If you have any tables ope from the database, close them first.

4. Open any database tables via HOME>Open>Database Table. If you have any existing TAB files already crated, select yet to overwrite and update them.

5. Navigate to TABLES>Maintenance>Make DBMS Table Mappable to define the projeciton and fields.

6. The table is now mappable and you can create points and edit their locations.

No data will be lost.

What data formats and file types can I import?

Discover and MapInfo Professional can import an extensive range of industry standard and 3rd party data formats.

The attached PDF (bottom of the page) list all supported formats under the following categories, and for each format details the location of the required import tool.

Tabular and Vector data (including databases, contour files, text files, GIS formats such as Shape and geopackage etc)

Raster Imagery (such as aerial photography, SPOT imagery, company logos, etc)

Gridded Surfaces (such as digital elevation models & geophysical grids, multibanded remote sensing data such as LANDSAT) - requires a 3D license for 3D visualization and processing

Drillhole & Trench data (such as collars points and downhole survey, downhole assays and wireline LAS logs) - requires a 3D license for 3D visualization and processing

GPS Data (such as GPX)

3D Vector Data (such as DXF of mine plans and drives, ore grade shells) - requires a 3D license for 3D visualization and processing

3D Resources Models (such as 3D vectors or block/voxel models, geophysical inversion models such as Magnetic or EM targets) - requires a 3D license

A range of additional formats can be imported using MapInfo's TABLE>Universal Translator (which is based on Safe Software's Feature Manipulation Engine (FME)).

How do I import an ESRI ArcGIS shape file (.shp) into MapInfo?

Discover has a powerful tool to batch input many files and will automatically set correct projections.

Discover method -

1. Select DISCOVER>Import>Vector Import.

2. Select File format to import

3. Select one or more files (note must be in the same folder for multiple files)

4. Review Output TAB filename, and other settings

5. Click Import

6. If a projection cannot be determined, you will be prompted to select a projection.

Alternatively Mapinfo has two different methods.

A: Use MapInfo's File>Open menu option, and set the Files of Type to ESRI Shapefile. This option
requires the user to specify a projection, and the file is read-only (it cannot be edited within MapInfo).

B: Use the Universal Translator. This option will pick up the projection information in the shapefile, and
creates a MapInfo table that is editable.

    To use the Universal Translator:

1/. Within MapInfo navigate to Tools>Universal Translator, open up this tool by clicking on the menu
item.

2/. In the Universal Translator dialog, set the Source Format to ESRI Shape.

3/. Browse to and select the Source Files (Note that you can batch convert by selecting multiple files).

4/. Set the Destination Format as MapInfo TAB

5/. Specify the Destination Directory location by browsing.

6/. Press OK and open the generated MapInfo tab file using the MapInfo File>Open command.

Note: When you import a SHP file colours and linestyles etc are lost. You can retrieve colours by storing these as an RGB code attribute in the SHP file. These colours can then be re-applied using Dis ...

How can I make visible the X and Y fields for a mapped ODBC/DBMS table?

Occurrence

After making a ODBC/DBMS linked table mappable, the fields used to map the X and Y Coordinate are missing
or invisible from the browser window. This is blocking me from using it as a Collar table in a Drillhole project.

Solution

Alternatively, you can view the X and Y fields from the mapped table, by creating a duplicate field in the database and subsequently link via DBMS.

The best way to achieve this would be to make -

1) Query/virtual fields in the datbase, that are simply "=X" and "=Y".

2) A query of the table, and place two entries for the X and Y fields in the query. Subsequently, link the query table in MapInfo via DBMS.

When mapped, the extra X and Y fields will be visible in the browser window.
