When I enable cursor plane clipping the voxel model is not clipped or shown correctly

Occurrence

The cursor plane clip is a handy way to clip or "slice" (like a section envelope) all data in the 3D window. However voxel model are not clipped correctly, or the internal content is not shown on the cursor plan clip face.

Solution

Voxel layers are not support by the cursor plane clip functionality, because they are "empty" voids with nothing inside each cell.

Instead you can enable under the Voxel Model Layers properties, on the slice tab, click the show button in the custom slices. Then click the synchrohnise to cursor plane button to enable it to display on the cursor plane.

Now as you move the cursor plane clip, you will see a slice of the voxel model drawn on the cursor plane.

How do I display voxel / block models on my cross-sections?

Discover3D can not only display mining package block models and create voxel models, it also has the ability to export voxel models as vector slices along multiple cross-sections. These vector slices are automatically associated with the cross-sections (i.e. automatically recognised and handled by the Section Manager), and comprise a polygon for each intersected voxel cell, attributed with that voxel cell's value.

This capability therefore opens a wealth of further analytical options within your 2D drillhole cross-sections. For example, resource calculations assisted via clipping these voxel slice polygons to interpreted high grade regions, or converting these vector slices into gridded surfaces for more advanced visualisation (e.g. contouring) and analysis.

Example

For instance, this functionality allows you to effortlessly take a 3D voxel model of say Cu mineralisation, such as :

And slice / intersect them across multiple 2D sections, producing attributed polygons representing the sliced voxel cells on a per section basis:

<img title="" alt="" src="https://discoverkb.dataminesoftware.com/images/Drill_VectorSection2.jpg" "="" align="Baseline" border="0" height="0" width="0"/>

Solution

1/.
How do I open or import my voxel or block model into 3D?

Occurrence

How do I open or import my voxel or block model in 3D?

Solution

There are 3 categories of voxel/block models you may try to open or load into Discover3D-

A) Native Encom (.e3d) voxels

These can be directly loaded by simply drag and dropping into the 3D window.

B) Standard Third Party Formats

Such as Datamine, Surpac, Micromine, UBC etc. These can be directly loaded by -

Select Data>Voxel Model to add a new empty branch

Double click on this new branch icon to open properties

On the File tab of the properties, there is Load Model.

Now you can follow the steps in the wizard

C) Generic ASCII test format

The most flexible method is to import and convert these into a standard Encom format. This method will handle all types or rotated and variable block sizes. This can be done by -

Select Grids>Voxel Manager

Click the open file button

Select the ASCII Import from the format list

Follow the wizard steps to specify the ASCII format and import it

Note Rotated models are not supported for any
format other than Encom3D Grid. The bounds of the model need to be parallel with
the X and Y axis. If you wish to import a rotated model, you will need to obtain
an ASCII (CSV) version of it.

How can I calculate the volume and average of a voxel model?

Occurrence

Can I calculate the volume of my Voxel Model? Can I calculate the volume for a specific assay range
or lithology groups?

Solution

Once you have created or loaded a Voxel Model in 3D, right-click on its Workspace branch and open
the Properties dialog for the model. Under the Data tab select the Model Information button.
This opens a text report summarising the Voxel model's properties and statistics (this can be saved),
as well as providing access to the statistics explorer.

Any lithology bands in the model, as set under the Lithology tab in the Properties dialog, will
automatically have their individual volumes calculated.

For assay and other data bands in the model, you will have to set a Threshold range (in the Threshold
tab). The Model Information text report will display the volume for the thresholded range, as well as
the mean value for the range.
